The Greens Country Club in Oklahoma City chose AirField Systems simple AirDrain Bunker Renovation that only took about 2.5 hours to install and should drain perfectly for many years to come. This system can be installed by the existing course grounds crew.

By raising the sand profile an inch across the entire floor bringing gravity into play in draining the bunker. Effectively making the entire floor of the bunker a drain.

In a typical bunker drainage system all the runoff and rainwater must enter the exit pipes in the bottom of the bunker. In most cases this works perfectly well, however when there is a very heavy downpour of inches per hour, a typical bunker drainage system has a hard time handling the enormous volume of water.

When water cannot enter the drain pipe at the bottom of the bunker because the drain pipe is full,  the sand in the bunker becomes the only place the water can go. The sand at the bottom of the bunker will fill with the water first, then the water will rise until it starts filling the sand in the walls of the bunker. When the sands in the walls of the bunker get overly saturated flashing occurs.

A bunker with an AirDrain system is designed to virtually eliminates flashing. Unlike other systems an AirDrain Bunker System creates a huge void under the entire sand profile of the bunker. AirDrain is 92% air and can hold .578 gallons of water per sqft. Until it can be evacuated.

When a very heavy downpour of several inches per hour occurs in an AirDrain bunker, gravity pulls the rainwater through the sand and into the huge void. Next the rainwater rapidly flows out the exit pipes. The evacuation of water happens so quickly the sand in the walls of the bunker never become saturated, therefore no flashing occurs.

A typical bunker sand drains 15 – 20 inches per hour. Remember the whole floor is a drain, relieving the water saturation of the sand in the bunker from top to bottom. A typical bunker installed herringbone drainage is minimal at best compared to  AirDrain’s maximum drainage on every level. No other product we know of comes close if the exit drains can move it.

This is due to the fact that not only would the exit drain pipe have to be full. And all the AirDrain grid on the bottom of the bunker would have to be full of water also, before the sand starts holding water. In fact, we have never really heard of an AirDrain bunker washing out.

To answer the debate of clogging geotextiles/filter fabrics see the Final Report form the 5 year Study at www.usga.org. Although with the AirDrain Bunker System the entire floor of the sand trap is a drain.

So even if a few feet of the sand trap did clog over a 15 year + span you would still have 95% of the floor of the bunker remaining to allow for optimal drainage by being able to go vertically through the profile.
